Roof Pitch Calculator — Angle, Multiplier & Rafter Length

The Roof Pitch Calculator converts between any three ways of expressing roof steepness: pitch (rise over 12-inch run), angle in degrees, and rise-and-run measurements. Enter your pitch as x/12 — or measure your rise and run directly and let the calculator find the pitch — or input an angle from a digital inclinometer a..

KEY FACTS

Pitch = rise (in) per 12" of horizontal run

Multiplier = sqrt(rise² + 144) / 12

Rafter = sqrt(run² + rise²)

6/12 = 26.6° = most common US residential

Below 3/12 = low-slope (special materials)

Above 8/12 = steep (higher labour cost)

Multiplier converts footprint to roof area

HOW TO USE

  1. 1

    Choose your input method. 'From Pitch (x/12)' is fastest if you already know or can read your pitch — enter the rise number (e.g. 6 for a 6/12 pitch) or pick a common pitch from the presets. 'From Rise & Run' lets you enter actual measured distances — useful when measuring an existing roof with a level and tape measure. 'From Angle' converts a degree measurement from a digital inclinometer or smartphone app.

  2. 2

    For Rise & Run mode: place a level horizontally on the roof. Measure 12 inches along the level (the run). Then measure straight down from the end of the level to the roof surface (the rise). Enter both values. You can switch units between inches and feet — useful for measuring full rafter triangles on the ground.

  3. 3

    Optionally enter your rafter run in feet to calculate the actual rafter length. The rafter run is half your building width (not including overhang). For a 30 ft wide building, the rafter run is 15 ft. The result gives you the cut length of each rafter before adding the overhang.

  4. 4

    Read the results: your pitch expressed as x/12, the equivalent angle in degrees, the slope multiplier (multiply your footprint area by this number to get actual roof area), the pitch category with installation notes, and rafter length if you entered a run.

  5. 5

    Use the pitch reference table on the right to compare your pitch against all common pitches at a glance. Your current pitch is highlighted. The table shows pitch, angle, multiplier, and category for every standard pitch from 2/12 to 12/12.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Finding pitch, angle, and rafter length for a roof measured as 6 inches of rise per 12 inches of run: Step 1: Pitch Pitch = rise / run x 12 = 6 / 12 x 12 = 6/12 Step 2: Angle Angle = arctan(rise / run) = arctan(6 / 12) = arctan(0.5) = 26.57° Step 3: Slope multiplier Multiplier = sqrt(6² + 12²) / 12 = sqrt(36 + 144) / 12 = sqrt(180) / 12 = 13.416 / 12 = 1.118 Step 4: Roof area from footprint (40 x 30 ft building) Roof area = 40 x 30 x 1.118 = 1,342 sq ft Step 5: Rafter length (building is 30 ft wide; rafter run = 15 ft) Rise at rafter = 15 ft x 0.5 = 7.5 ft Rafter length = sqrt(15² + 7.5²) = sqrt(225 + 56.25) = sqrt(281.25) = 16.77 ft Step 6: Add 12" overhang Total rafter with tail = 16.77 + 1.00 = 17.77 ft — cut to 17' 10"
