Square Inches to Square Metres Converter

Square inches to square metres is a manufacturing and materials conversion. Component footprints, panel sizes, printed circuit boards, gaskets, labels and coated surfaces are specified in square inches in American engineering practice and in square metres almost everywhere else, so any specification crossing that bound…

HOW TO USE

  1. 1

Type the number of square inches into the value box. The converter opens with square inches and square metres already selected, so the answer appears as you type.

  2. 2

Read the result in square metres. The conversion is a division by 1,550.0031, applied at full precision — the displayed rounding is for readability only.

  3. 3

Use the search box to switch either unit if you need a different pair. The same converter handles every length unit from the Planck length to the megaparsec.

  4. 4

Check the direction as a sanity test: converting to square metres must make the number smaller, because a square metre is the larger unit.

ABOUT AREA UNITS

Area is measured against the square metre, the SI derived unit. Because area is length squared, each metric step is a hundredfold jump, not tenfold: a square metre is 10,000 square centimetres and 1,000,000 square millimetres. The everyday imperial units follow the same rule — a square yard is 9 square feet, and an acre is 43,560 square feet — while land is measured in acres, hectares (10,000 m²), ares and dunams. Traditional South Asian units are widely used for property: a guntha is 1⁄40 of an acre, a cent is 1⁄100 of an acre, and the bigha, katha, marla and kanal are common across India and Pakistan — though several of these vary by region, so this tool uses the most common standard values. East Asian units like the Japanese tsubo, the Korean pyeong and the Thai rai are included too, alongside the scientific barn (10⁻²⁸ m²) used for nuclear cross-sections. Every unit is stored as its exact number of square metres, so any conversion is just the input turned into square metres and then into the target unit.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

One square inch is 0.00064516 square metres. Put the other way round, there are 1,550.0031 square inches in a square metre. That figure is exact rather than approximate. Area factors are the square of the linear ones, and the linear ones were fixed exactly by the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement — the inch at 25.4 mm, so the square inch at exactly 0.00064516 m².

  • 1 square inch = 0.00064516 square metres
  • 1 square metre = 1,550.0031 square inches
  • Exact by definition, not a measurement
  • 10 square inches = 0.0064516 square metres
