Force is a push or pull, defined by Newton’s second law as mass times acceleration, and its SI unit is the newton (N) — the force that accelerates one kilogram at one metre per second squared. As a rough feel, holding a small apple takes about one newton. A second family measures force as weight, the pull of gravity on a mass under standard gravity (g = 9.80665 m/s²): one kilogram-force (kgf, also called a kilopond) is the weight of one kilogram, or 9.80665 N, and gram-force and tonne-force scale with it. The imperial and US world uses the pound-force (lbf), the weight of one pound, equal to 4.44822 N; from it come the ounce-force (a sixteenth of a pound-force), the kip (1,000 lbf, common in structural engineering), and ton-force in both the short US (2,000 lbf) and long UK (2,240 lbf) forms, plus the poundal, an “absolute” unit equal to about 0.1383 N. The CGS system contributes the tiny dyne, one hundred-thousandth of a newton, used in physics and for surface tension, while the historical sthène equals one kilonewton. Because kilogram-force and pound-force both measure weight, converting between them gives 1 kgf = 2.20462 lbf — exactly the same ratio as kilograms to pounds.
