Pounds per Square Inch to Bar Converter

Convert pounds per square inch to bar instantly — the reverse of the popular tyre-pressure conversion. One psi is about 0.0689476 bar, so to go from pounds per square inch (psi) to bar you multiply by 0.0689476 (or divide by 14.5038). For example, 32 psi ≈ 2.21 bar and 14.5038 psi = 1 bar. This converter defaults to ps…

HOW TO USE

  1. 1

Enter the pressure in pounds per square inch (psi) in the value box — the converter defaults to psi → bar.

  2. 2

Read the bar result instantly, or do it by hand: divide the psi by 14.5038 (or multiply by 0.0689476).

  3. 3

Use the equivalence line for reference, or tap ⇄ to convert bar back to psi.

  4. 4

Need another unit? Pick kPa, atmospheres, pascals or any of 29 units in the dropdown, then Share or Embed your conversion.

ABOUT PRESSURE UNITS

Pressure is force spread over an area, and its SI unit is the pascal (Pa), defined as one newton per square metre. A pascal is tiny, so everyday pressures use larger units: the bar (100,000 Pa), the kilopascal, and the standard atmosphere. One atmosphere — roughly the air pressure at sea level — is 101,325 Pa, which is 1.01325 bar, 14.696 psi or 760 mmHg. Different fields keep their own favourites: weather forecasts use hectopascals or millibars (the two are identical, both 100 Pa); tyre and industrial pressure use psi, bar or kilogram-force per square centimetre; blood pressure and vacuum work use millimetres of mercury (mmHg) and the torr, which are all but identical. Column units like mmHg, inches of mercury and inches of water come from the height of a liquid, so they fold in the liquid’s density and gravity. Every unit here is stored as its exact number of pascals, so any conversion is just the input turned into pascals and then into the target unit. Note that gauge pressure (psig, barg) measures above the surrounding air, while absolute pressure includes it — this tool converts the numeric value and leaves that choice to you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Multiply the number of psi by 0.0689476, or equivalently divide by 14.5038. This follows from one psi being about 6,894.76 Pa and one bar being 100,000 Pa. For example, 40 psi × 0.0689476 ≈ 2.76 bar.

  • Formula: bar = psi × 0.0689476.
  • Or divide psi by 14.5038.
  • 40 psi ≈ 2.76 bar.
  • To reverse it, multiply bar by 14.5038.
