HOW TO USE

  1. 1

Enter the number of shares purchased, your purchase price per share, and the price at which you sold (or the current price if still holding).

  2. 2

Enter the annual dividend per share if the stock paid dividends. Leave at 0 for growth stocks with no dividend. This is the total annual dividend per share, not per quarter.

  3. 3

Enter the holding period in years. This is used to calculate the annualized return (CAGR) — how much the investment returned per year on average.

  4. 4

The calculator shows your total return, capital gain, total dividends received, annualized return, and dividend yield. A negative result means the investment lost money.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Emma bought 100 shares of a company at $50 per share and sold them at $75 per share after 3 years. The stock paid no dividends. Total invested: 100 × $50 = $5,000. Sale value: 100 × $75 = $7,500. Capital gain: $2,500. Total return: $2,500 / $5,000 = 50%. Annualized return: (1.50^(1/3) − 1) × 100 = 14.47% per year. Emma turned $5,000 into $7,500 — a 1.50× multiple.
