A retailer in Ontario sells a laptop for C$1,200 before tax. Ontario uses HST at 13%. Tax = C$1,200 × 13% = C$156. Total charged to customer = C$1,356. The retailer remits C$156 to the CRA. If the same laptop were sold in Alberta (GST only at 5%), the tax would be C$60 and the total C$1,260 — a C$96 saving for the consumer. In British Columbia (GST 5% + PST 7%), the tax would be C$60 GST + C$84 PST = C$144 total tax, bringing the total to C$1,344.
