HOW TO USE

  1. 1

Select your filing status and enter your total gross income for 2025 — this includes wages, salary, freelance income, and any other taxable income before deductions.

  2. 2

Enter your total federal income tax withheld from all W-2s and 1099s for the year. You can find this in Box 2 of your W-2 form.

  3. 3

Choose standard or itemized deductions. The 2025 standard deduction is $15,750 (single) or $31,500 (MFJ). If your itemized deductions (mortgage interest, state taxes, charitable gifts) exceed this, enter the itemized total instead.

  4. 4

Enter any tax credits — number of children for the Child Tax Credit ($2,200 each in 2025) and any other credits. The calculator subtracts these from your tax liability to show your final refund or balance due.

WORKED EXAMPLE

John is single with $60,000 gross income in 2025 and $8,000 withheld in federal taxes. Step 1: Standard deduction → $60,000 − $15,750 = $44,250 taxable income. Step 2: Tax → $11,925 × 10% = $1,192.50 + ($44,250 − $11,925) × 12% = $3,879 → Total tax = $5,071.50. Step 3: No credits. Step 4: Refund = $8,000 − $5,071.50 = $2,928.50. John is over-withheld and will receive a $2,928.50 refund.
