Blood Pressure Calculator — AHA/ACC Categories

The Blood Pressure Calculator classifies any systolic/diastolic reading using AHA/ACC 2017 guidelines into 6 categories: Normal, Elevated, High Stage 1, High Stage 2, Hypertensive Crisis, and Low (Hypotension). Calculates MAP (Mean Arterial Pressure = (SBP + 2×DBP) / 3) and Pulse Pressure (SBP − DBP) with interpretatio..

HOW TO USE

  1. 1

Enter your systolic blood pressure (the top number — the higher value from your reading) and your diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number — the lower value). Both are in mmHg. Quick-select buttons for common values are provided for both. Optionally enter your pulse rate in beats per minute (bpm) if your monitor displays it.

  2. 2

Your blood pressure is classified instantly using AHA/ACC 2017 guidelines into one of 6 categories: Normal (<120/<80), Elevated (120-129/<80), High Stage 1 (130-139 OR 80-89), High Stage 2 (≥140 OR ≥90), Hypertensive Crisis (≥180 OR >120), or Low/Hypotension (<90/<60). The result card changes colour to match the category — green for normal, yellow for elevated, orange for Stage 1, red for Stage 2, dark red for crisis, and blue for low.

  3. 3

Read your MAP (Mean Arterial Pressure = (SBP + 2×DBP) / 3) and Pulse Pressure (SBP − DBP). MAP represents the average pressure your organs experience and should be between 70-100 mmHg. Pulse pressure indicates arterial elasticity and should be 25-60 mmHg. Both values are colour-coded green (normal) or orange (out of range).

  4. 4

Use the BP gauge on the right to see where your reading falls on the visual scale from 60 to 200 mmHg. Two markers show SBP (black triangle below the bar) and DBP (grey triangle above). The bar is colour-coded with all 6 categories, so you can instantly see how far your reading is from each boundary.

  5. 5

Log multiple readings using the '+ Add to Reading Log' button. The log table shows each reading with SBP, DBP, MAP, Pulse Pressure, and category, plus an average row when 2+ readings are logged. Averaging multiple readings taken 1 minute apart gives a more accurate picture than a single reading.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Blood Pressure Classification — worked examples: READING 1: 120/80 mmHg MAP = (120 + 2×80) / 3 = 280/3 = 93.3 mmHg (normal) Pulse Pressure = 120 - 80 = 40 mmHg (normal) Category: High — Stage 1 (Because DBP of 80 meets the Stage 1 threshold: 80-89 mmHg) READING 2: 115/75 mmHg MAP = (115 + 150) / 3 = 265/3 = 88.3 mmHg PP = 115 - 75 = 40 mmHg Category: Normal (SBP <120 AND DBP <80) READING 3: 125/78 mmHg MAP = (125 + 156) / 3 = 93.7 mmHg PP = 125 - 78 = 47 mmHg Category: Elevated (SBP 120-129 AND DBP <80) READING 4: 145/92 mmHg MAP = (145 + 184) / 3 = 109.7 mmHg (above normal) PP = 145 - 92 = 53 mmHg Category: High — Stage 2 (SBP ≥140 OR DBP ≥90) AVERAGE OF 5 READINGS: 128/82, 132/85, 125/80, 130/83, 127/81 Average SBP = (128+132+125+130+127)/5 = 128.4 Average DBP = (82+85+80+83+81)/5 = 82.2 Category: High — Stage 1 (DBP 80-89) HYPERTENSIVE CRISIS RULE: Either SBP ≥180 OR DBP >120 triggers crisis 185/85: Crisis (SBP ≥180) — even though DBP is normal 160/125: Crisis (DBP >120) — even though SBP <180

REFERENCE FORMULAS

FORMULA REFERENCE TABLE

MetricFormulaDescription
MAP (Mean Arterial Pressure)MAP = (SBP + 2 × DBP) / 3Average pressure in arteries during one cardiac cycle. Normal: 70-100 mmHg. <60 = organ underperfusion risk.
Pulse PressurePP = SBP − DBPThe difference between systolic and diastolic. Normal: 25-60 mmHg. >60 = possible arterial stiffness.
AHA/ACC ClassificationBased on higher of SBP or DBP tierNormal <120/<80 | Elevated 120-129/<80 | Stage 1: 130-139 OR 80-89 | Stage 2: ≥140 OR ≥90 | Crisis: ≥180 OR >120.
Systolic (SBP)Pressure when heart contracts (beats)The top number. Peak arterial pressure during heartbeat. Primary driver of cardiovascular risk.
Diastolic (DBP)Pressure when heart rests between beatsThe bottom number. Arterial pressure at rest between heartbeats. Lower importance than SBP for most adults.
Average of readingsAvg SBP = Σ(SBP) / n; same for DBPRecommended: 2-3 readings, 1 min apart, both arms. Discard first reading; average the rest.
Hypertensive crisis ruleCrisis if SBP ≥180 OR DBP >120Either threshold alone triggers crisis category regardless of the other number.
