What does a negative exponent mean?

A negative exponent means take the reciprocal: base^(-n) = 1 / base^n Examples: 2^(-1) = 1/2 = 0.5 2^(-3) = 1/8 = 0.125 10^(-2) = 1/100 = 0.01 5^(-2) = 1/25 = 0.04 Negative exponents appear naturally in scientific notation: 1 nanometre = 10^(-9) metres.

What does a fractional exponent mean?
