HOW YOUR AGE IS CALCULATED

Age is measured the way people naturally count it: in whole years, then the leftover whole months, then the leftover days. The calculator starts from your date of birth and counts complete years up to the target date, then complete months, then the remaining days. Because calendar months are different lengths (28 to 31 days) and leap years add a 29th of February, a purely decimal “age = days ÷ 365” shortcut drifts by a day or more — so this tool counts real calendar units instead. When a birth day does not exist in a shorter month (for example the 31st, or the 29th of February in a common year), the month is completed on that month’s last day, which is why a 29 February birthday is counted on 28 February in common years and on 29 February in leap years.

WHAT PEOPLE USE IT FOR

Official forms & eligibility

Confirm exact age for passports, driving licences, pensions, school admission cut-offs and voting or retirement eligibility, where “years and days” can matter.

Health & medical records

Paediatric growth charts, medication dosing and screening schedules are often keyed to age in months for infants or to an exact age on a given date.

Milestones & planning

Count down to a birthday, an anniversary, or the precise day someone reaches 18, 21, 60 or any other milestone.

HR, legal & finance

Verify age of majority, compute length-of-service, or check age-based tax and benefit thresholds as of a specific effective date.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Age is calculated by counting complete calendar units from your date of birth up to the target date: first the number of whole years, then the whole months that have passed since your last birthday, and finally the leftover days. This mirrors how people naturally state their age — for example “35 years, 2 months and 10 days” — rather than as a single decimal number. The calculator compares the day, month and year of both dates and borrows from the next-largest unit whenever the target day or month falls earlier than your birth day or month.

  • Years: count each birthday that has fully passed on or before the target date.
  • Months: from your most recent birthday, count each complete month up to the target date.
  • Days: count the remaining days after the last complete month.
  • If the target day is earlier than your birth day, one month is borrowed and its days are added in.

NOTES & REFERENCES

  • Calendar and leap-year rules follow the Gregorian calendar (in use since 1582): a leap year is divisible by 4, except century years, which must be divisible by 400.
  • Western (tropical) zodiac date ranges use the commonly published sun-sign boundaries; exact cusp dates can shift by a day between years.
  • Chinese zodiac animals follow the 12-year cycle by calendar year; because the Chinese New Year falls in late January or February, people born in that window may belong to the previous animal.
  • Heartbeat, breathing and sleep figures are illustrative averages (about 80 beats and 16 breaths per minute, and roughly one third of life asleep) and vary by person, age and activity.
  • Orbital distance uses Earth’s average path length of roughly 940 million kilometres per year.
