HOW CURRENCY CONVERSION WORKS

An exchange rate is simply the price of one currency in terms of another, and unlike a length or weight it is not fixed — it moves continuously as banks and traders buy and sell. This converter uses the mid-market rate (also called the interbank or reference rate): the midpoint between the buy and sell prices, and the fairest single number for a conversion. To convert between any two currencies, the rate is crossed through a common base: to change CHF into SEK, divide by the CHF-to-USD rate and multiply by the SEK-to-USD rate. The rates here are published reference rates, refreshed on business days from the European Central Bank and other sources — they are ideal for estimates and tracking trends, but they are not a live trading feed, and they are not the rate you actually receive: a bank, card or money-transfer service adds a margin (often 0.5–3%) plus any fixed fee, so your real cost is a little higher than the mid-market figure. When comparing providers, look at the total amount received after all fees, not just the headline rate. The 30-day trend line shows which way a pair has moved recently, which is useful for timing a transfer, but past movement is not a prediction. Currency codes follow the ISO 4217 standard — three letters, usually the two-letter country code plus the currency's initial (USD, GBP, JPY) — and this tool covers 160+ of them, from the majors to small-nation and pegged currencies.
