What is the difference between calendar days and business days?

Calendar days count every day, including Saturdays and Sundays. Business days count only Monday to Friday, which is the basis most contracts, couriers and government offices use for deadlines. Because weekends are skipped, a business-day span is longer on the calendar — ten business days actually covers fourteen calendar days. Turn on the business-days option and the calculator shows both the resulting date and the true calendar span.

Does it skip public holidays?

The business-days option skips weekends but not public holidays, because holidays differ by country, region and even by company. If your deadline is defined in “working days” and your area has public holidays within the span, you may need to add those on. For a plain calendar count, every day is included regardless of holidays.

Does counting start today or tomorrow?

Counting begins the day after the start date, so the result is that many days later. “1 day from today” is tomorrow, and “7 days from today” is one week later on the same weekday. In business-day mode, “1 business day from Friday” is the following Monday, because Saturday and Sunday are skipped.

Can I count days before a date instead of after?

Yes. Choose “Before date” and the calculator counts backward from your chosen date, which answers questions like “what date was 45 days ago?” or “if something is due in 30 business days, what is the latest I can start?”. The direction arrow and result update immediately so you can see which way you are counting.

Are leap years handled correctly?

Yes. The calculator uses the Gregorian calendar and includes 29 February in any leap year that falls within your span, so a count that crosses a leap day stays accurate. Leap years are those divisible by four, except century years, which must also be divisible by 400.
