ABOUT VOLUME UNITS

Volume is measured against the cubic metre, the SI derived unit. Because volume is length cubed, each metric step is a thousandfold jump: one cubic metre is 1,000 litres and 1,000,000 millilitres. The litre itself is one cubic decimetre, and a millilitre is exactly one cubic centimetre. The biggest trap is the gallon: a US gallon is 3.785 litres, but an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.546 litres — about 20% larger — and the same gap runs through pints and fluid ounces. On top of that, the US keeps separate liquid and dry measures, so a US dry pint is larger than a US liquid pint. Cooking adds its own quirks: a US cup is 236.6 mL, a metric cup is 250 mL, and an Australian tablespoon is 20 mL rather than the usual 15 mL. This tool also covers cubic imperial units (cubic inch, foot, yard) and specialty measures — the oil barrel (42 US gallons), the acre-foot used in water management, and the cord and board foot used for timber. Every unit is stored as its exact number of cubic metres, so any conversion is just the input turned into cubic metres and then into the target unit.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

It supports 59 units across eight groups: metric cubic, metric capacity, cooking, US liquid, US dry, imperial (UK), cubic imperial and timber, and scientific. That ranges from the microlitre and the cubic millimetre up to the acre-foot and the cubic kilometre.

  • Metric: cubic millimetre to cubic kilometre; nanolitre to gigalitre.
  • US liquid & dry: fluid ounce, pint, gallon, bushel, oil barrel.
  • Imperial (UK): pint, quart, gallon, bushel.
  • Specialty: acre-foot, cord, board foot, cubic ångström.
