5K Pace Calculator

Pick a 5K target and this works out the pace you need to hold, split by kilometre and by 400 metre lap, along with a race plan for how to spread the effort. It is built around the target rather than around the arithmetic: choose sub-25, sub-20 or type your own, and everything else follows from it. A...

A 5K on a track is twelve and a half laps. That half is why the start is 200 metres behind the finish line, on the back straight — you cross the line twelve times and the thirteenth crossing is the finish. Runners count down rather than up, because knowing there are three to go is more useful than knowing you have done nine and a half.

A progression starts 10 seconds per kilometre slower than average and finishes 10 faster, which still totals exactly 25:00 — the halves come out 12:45 and 12:15. Nearly every 5K personal best is run this way round, because time banked in the first kilometre is repaid with interest in the last.

HOW TO USE

  1. 1

Enter your 5K target time, or tap one of the common targets. Times are mm:ss, so 25:00 is twenty-five minutes and 22:30 is twenty-two and a half.

  2. 2

Read the pace you need — per kilometre, per mile, and per 400 metre lap. The lap figure is the one to memorise if you are racing on a track.

  3. 3

Use the lap split table as your race sheet. The times are cumulative, so they are what the clock should read as you cross the line on each lap.

  4. 4

Switch the progression between even and ±3, ±5 or ±8 seconds to see how a negative split would look. Whichever you pick, the five kilometre splits still add up to exactly your target.
