    Set the wythes to two if this is a full-brick wall rather than a single skin. That doubles the count, and for a free-standing wall at 3 metres it is usually the right setting.

    Enter any openings as an area to deduct. On a wall this size a single door or window is a meaningful fraction of the total.

WORKED EXAMPLE

A 10m × 3m wall in standard 215 by 65 millimetre brick with a 10 millimetre joint, single skin. The area is 10 × 3 = 30 square metres. Each brick occupies a module of 225 by 75 millimetres — the brick plus one joint on two sides — which is 0.016875 square metres. One divided by that gives 59.26 bricks per square metre. So 30 × 59.26 = 1778 bricks for the bare wall. Adding ten percent for breakage and cuts brings the order to 1956. Note what happens if you work from the brick rather than the module: 215 by 65 is 0.013975 square metres, giving 71.6 bricks per square metre and 2362 for this wall. That is about 21% too many — on this wall, 406 bricks bought for nothing. For a full-brick wall of two wythes, double the figure to 3912.
