Should bricks be wet before laying?

It depends on the brick and the weather. Highly absorbent bricks in hot dry conditions will suck the water out of the mortar before the cement can hydrate, and damping them lightly prevents that. Dense engineering bricks and any brick in cool damp weather should be laid dry — a saturated brick floats on the mortar rather than bedding into it, and the wall moves as it dries. Concrete bricks and blocks should never be wetted, because they shrink as they dry and crack the joints.
