HOW THE COUNTDOWN WORKS

Diwali follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar rather than a fixed date, falling on the new-moon night (Amavasya) of the month of Kartik — the day of Lakshmi Puja. Because that cannot be worked out with a simple formula, this calculator uses verified Drik Panchang dates for India, then measures the exact time between right now and midnight at the start of that day. It updates every second, so the seconds tick down live and the day count drops by one at each midnight. Dates are available for 20252045; the times use your own device’s clock.

ABOUT DIWALI

Diwali — Deepavali, the festival of lights — is the biggest festival of the year for Hindus and is also marked by Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists. Homes are lit with rows of diyas, decorated with rangoli and marigolds, and the night of Lakshmi Puja is celebrated with prayers to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha, fireworks and sweets — symbolising the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. It is a gazetted public holiday across India and is celebrated by the Indian diaspora worldwide. Because the date depends on the moon and the local sunset, Diwali can fall a day earlier outside India; this countdown uses the India date.
