HOW THE COUNTDOWN WORKS

Holi falls on the full moon (Purnima) of the Hindu month of Phalguna — the colour-play day, Rangwali Holi, is the morning after the Holika Dahan bonfire. Because that is set by the lunar calendar rather than a fixed formula, this calculator uses the published Drik Panchang dates and measures the exact time between right now and midnight at the start of the Holi day you choose. It updates every second, so the seconds tick down live and the day count drops by one at each midnight. The lunar date drifts against the Western calendar, so Holi usually lands in March. Dates are available for 20262036; the times use your device’s clock.

ABOUT HOLI

Holi is the Hindu festival of colours, love and spring — the second-largest festival after Diwali. It celebrates the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil, drawing on the legends of Holika and Prahlad and the playful love of Radha and Krishna. Celebrations begin the evening before with the Holika Dahan bonfire; the next morning is Rangwali Holi, when people of all ages smear each other with gulal (coloured powder) and drench one another in coloured water, share sweets like gujiya, and gather with family and friends. The Braj-region festivities — Mathura, Vrindavan and the world-famous Lathmar Holi of Barsana — are especially celebrated. Beyond India and Nepal, Holi is now enjoyed around the world.
