Working out how much reinforcing bar a slab needs looks like simple division and it hides two traps that between them will leave you short on almost every job. The first is a counting error. Bars laid across a span are gaps plus one, not span divided by spacing — a twenty foot clear span at twelve i...

SETTING THE MAT
Order 67 lengths of #4 at 20 ft, about 403 kg of steel.
Cut 20 bars to 29.5 ft and 30 to 19.5 ft. Bars stop at the cover line, never at the slab edge — steel that reaches the edge rusts and spalls the concrete off.
Lay the mat on chairs so it sits within the slab rather than on the ground. Steel resting on the base carries nothing and corrodes.
Tie 600 intersections — roughly 4.3 kg of 16 gauge wire at 18 in per tie. Every intersection does not need tying; alternate ones is normal practice for a slab mat.
THE MAT
Bars are gaps plus one. The clear span across the width is 19.5 ft, which at 1 ft centres gives 19 gaps — and 20 bars, because there is a bar at each end of every gap. Dividing the span by the spacing and stopping there is the classic fencepost error, and it leaves you one bar short in each direction on every job.

Enter the slab length and width, then the bar spacing and the edge cover. Cover is the distance from the slab edge to the first bar — steel that runs to the edge will rust and spall the concrete off, so bars always stop short.
Choose your bar size. US sizes are eighths of an inch, so a #4 is four eighths, or half an inch. Metric sizes are the diameter in millimetres. The weight per unit length appears underneath as you change it.
Open site adjustments to set the stock length your supplier sells, the lap as a multiple of bar diameter, and how many mats you are laying. Two mats means top and bottom steel, which doubles everything.
Read off the number of lengths to order. The breakdown shows bar counts each way, the linear total before and after laps, the total weight, and how many intersections need tying.

Weights are computed from the nominal diameter at a steel density of 7,850 kg/m³ rather than taken from a table, so the imperial and metric figures cannot disagree with each other. Every value matches published mill data to within 0.2%.
